Greater safety and efficiency are the driving factors and the increased performance of optical sensors and measuring technology as well as a marketable innovative sensor technologies are the supporting factors for the growing significance of monitoring safety-relevant constructions, systems, and components. Condition monitoring, or structural health monitoring (SHM), are the terms used in the respective areas of application at the intersection of sensor and measuring technology, experimental structural analysis, and non-destructive testing.

The VDI/VDE Expert Forum 2008 follows up on the successful events of last year: It will offer up-to-date information on practical experiences and new technologies – especially in the area of optical sensors, measuring and testing technology. The forum will also provide a platform for discussion and exchange of experiences among experts. The focus is on solution-oriented topics, ranging from the aerospace and construction industry to systems and components. Leading experts will talk about their experience from a manufacturer, developer, and user point of view, emphasizing safety and efficiency aspects.

Today’s aerospace industry, for example, with its highly innovative composite materials cannot do exist  without optical methods for structural analysis and health monitoring. The same is true for the wind energy industry – especially for offshore plants. The increasing complexity of support systems, monitoring of the behaviour of novel construction material under service conditions, early detection of structural damage, aging and fatigue, as well as the effects of service changes and environmental influences increasingly demand permanent monitoring in regard to safety of structures – for example in the civil traffic infrastructure.

The new possibilities of optical methods and the utility of structural testing and condition monitoring in regard to safety and economy is the central theme linking all contributions in the expert forum.
